Aled Rheon : Sêr yn Disgyn EP

Cardiff based bilingual singer songwriter Aled Rheon has achieved a higher profile, including a BBC 6 Music Session, as a result of his well earnt inclusion in the 2015 Horizons / Gorwelion list of new Welsh artists, but this debut is from 2013, and is sung in Welsh throughout.

Sêr yn Disgyn ('Falling Stars') has just six songs and clocks in at around 23 minutes, an extended EP, but it is resolutely not a slight offering. Expertly and intimately produced by Osain Gwynedd, the whole set is consistently engaging.

The opening song Tawel Fel Y Bedd ('Quiet as the Grave') has an insistent finger picked guitar melody, accented with cello, and a clear, almost hauntingly clear vocal. Cysga'n Dawel, Poeni Dim, Dyma Fi'n Mynd continue in the same flow - delicate, gentle but uplifting before Muriau ('Walls') forces its way in with drums and band, showing that Rheon's songwriting talent is not lost in fuller instrumentation. The last song, Wy Ar Lwy, Aled and Greta Isaac's voices underpinned by a melancholy guitar and then cello, is just beautiful.

Quietly and softly exhilarating.
