Jon Boden

Essential Gigs : Jon Boden : Welsh Solo Tour

The ambition and achievement of Jon Boden's last album, Afterglow, drew comparisons to Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and David Bowie; elsewhere the multi-instrumentalist has been tagged as a modern day Richard Thompson. His career to date - redefining big band folk with Bellowhead, touring and recording as Boden & Spiers, and solo - has gathered eleven Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Despite a talent to drive expansive, electrifying collaborations, it is on a stage alone that his connection to an audience is at is starkest and most authoritative.

This September, Boden arrives in Wales to herald autumn with a short, four date solo tour. He will bring the darker narratives of Afterglow and its older sibling, Songs From The Floodplain, interpretations of traditional folksongs and music from across his past projects.

If that is not enough, there is a new album (Rose in June) made with his current cohorts, The Remnant Kings, due out in November - and sallying out from his expected stomping ground, there's always a chance of a sublime Whitney Houston cover.

As a bonus for North West Wales, support for the tour's Galeri date comes from Welsh-language singer-songwriter Elidyr Glyn, whose rich, sonorous voice has rare emotive depth.

Feted for his musicianship and spirit, Boden is associated with the Dark Mountain Project, a link underlining the intellectual range of his work, marking him out as an important cultural voice. In all the political tumult and chaos of the season, these Welsh solo dates will offer a glimpse of sanity and a moment of calm - unmissable respite from a world turning upside down.
