The Joy Formidable : A Balloon Called Moaning / Y Falŵn Drom25.10.2019 : Hassle Records
You only have to get a few seconds into the new acoustic version of Whirring to realise that The Joy Formidable's re-issue of their first EP, A Balloon Called Moaning, is not going to be a tired commercial re-tread but a thing of genuine wonder. The track has form - it was Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters' 'song of the year' when it first came out, but has found a new level of grace ten years on.
The debut EP was originally released in all its electric splendour in 2009, and was widely acclaimed. To celebrate a decade later the trio have gone back and reworked the eight songs, in English and in Welsh - remastering the original (English language) EP and recording acoustic versions in Welsh.
Revitalised, uplifting and genuinely moving, the acoustic version of Whirring would be the finest few minutes of music heard so far this year, except it sounds even better in Welsh. You can pre-order the limited edition double CD or vinyl here.
The band have also announced the launch of Formidable Fest / Gŵyl Aruthrol, a mini festival at The Tramshed, Cardiff on Saturday 23 November 2019. As lead singer/guitarist Ritzy has commented:
"We see Formidable Fest as a lovely opportunity for us to invite some bands to play in Wales, in front of an audience that otherwise might not get to see them. That, and having a bill that promotes Welsh language acts and bands from Wales - just a really inclusive night of great music. We'll be doing 2 shows that night, one short acoustic Welsh set & the other full electric."
Until then, A Balloon Called Moaning / Y Falŵn Drom rates as a must have.
